Reiki is an energy healing system which uses the Reiki energy of the Universe. It was discovered by Dr. Usui in Japan in the beginning of the 20th century, however, there is speculation that Reiki healing existed long before (there are practices and attunements similar to those used in Reiki in Tibetian Buddism), but at some point the knowledge was lost and had to be regained.
Reiki: Origin and Meaning
Usui-sensei
Translated from Japanese, Reiki literally means “Sacred Energy” or “Spiritual Energy”, where REI is considered Universal Energy Outside all living things, and KI is the Life Force Energy (also known as Chi, Prana and Ti). Reiki is a unique practice because, unlike many other energy techniques, it works with a wide range of energetical vibrations and doesn’t require to use one’s Life Force Energy when practicing it, as most of healing is done by the Reiki of the Universe.
Dr Usui was teaching that the enlightenment and healing start from oneself and from within. However, Reiki is also a gift to be shared with others. Usui-sensei saw the world much improved with spreading of Reiki healing. He always taught that one should never put limits on the power of Reiki, for it is able to benefit any conditional-physical, mental/emotional and spiritual.

There are many schools of Reiki nowadays – they have many similarities, however they differ in some aspects. The one that I am practicing is Usui Reiki Ryoho – the traditional reiki school based on Mrs Hawayo Takata’s writings as well as some of the few Usui-sensei’s writings.
